Oct 29, 2016 TalonSoft’s clunky East Front advances forward. East Front is a platoon-level wargame covering battles between Germany and the Soviet Union in WWII. It replaces the earlier games’ hand-painted maps with tile-based boards, a random map generator and scenario editor.
Board games and video games can get along quite well, they can both include strategy, organization, and rules. And back in the day, videogames similar to board games were more common than you might think. This is where East Front II comes in. Developed in by TalonSoft, and released in 1999, East Front II is not a sequel, despite what the name implies.
Which is to say this game has one Hamburger Hill of a learning curve. To be honest, after the tutorial, I didn't even want to play anymore. In all fairness, I have to give Talonsoft the proper credit for creating the most thorough, complete war game and virtual World War II encyclopedia with which I've ever collapsed from boredom.
TalonSoft, Inc. Was an American video game developer and publisher based in Baltimore, Maryland. The company was founded in March 1995, by video game producers Jim Rose and John Davidson.
The II stands for a second revision of the game, but let's not get stuck in that and move on to the game itself!
About the game
Just like the board game by the same name, East Front II is a strategy/hex wargame. The turn-based action is pretty similar to something you'd find in a board game of the same style. Each turn lasts about six minutes, and most scenarios usually last about two hours. You have to build up your army and create a strategy to defeat your opponent, but be very careful, and consider every situation possible.
What's New?
The original East front was apparently released in a rush, so they didn't really polish everything out before launch and left a lot of content out. Not only this, but the very mechanics of the game were buggy and the AI wasn't very good. Now they added 52 new scenarios, including a what-if scenario design mode. With this, you can create different kinds of new scenarios using pre-existent settings.
This helps a lot when it comes to replayability. There's also a new dynamic campaign mode that can help make things a little bit faster, and polishes some of the already existing mechanics. The visuals were also improved, and even the soundtrack and sound was enhanced. The menus received a makeover, making them more intuitive and easy to navigate. So, overall you could say that this is not really an upgrade of the original game, but rather the way it was meant to be released.

Review
Even though it is outdated, this title was amazing for its time. So many scenarios and possibilities in a nice presentation. Somehow it never became a popular title, but if you're a fan of strategy, board games, history, and military games, you should really check this one out.

Sure, it may not be the most modern or well-looking game of the genre, but it will give you many hours of gaming and strategy to have fun with.

Graphics and Visuals: The hexagonal map works perfectly in this game, it looks nice and detailed enough. But even for its launch time, it was a little bit outdated, especially when it comes to the menus and the art itself of the game, or rather the lack of.
Gameplay: This improved version of the original game adds a lot of missing mechanics and modes that greatly enhance the gameplay of this game. Not only because it made it easier to control, but also because it adds replay value.
Sound: The sound in this game is not great, it is just ok. You'd be better off just turning the volume all the way down and listening to the music of your own while playing this game.
